“ Why an EVS Operator Has to Think Like a Director, Editor and Camera Operator”
The best EVS operators don’t just record clips – they build a story. Their clip order often is the narrative. You can throw their material straight onto a timeline and it already feels like a rough cut. That’s why a great EVS operator is, in a way, part camera operator, part director, part editor. Like a camera operator, they must understand what is truly important to capture – not everything that moves, but key reactions, turning points, emotions and moments we simply cannot

“Training is not enough”
The biggest obstacle in our industry is not the lack of courses. It’s the lack of hands-on practice after the course. You can spend good money on a 3-day EVS training, collect the certificate, post a nice photo on LinkedIn… and still be unable to deliver a clean replay show three weeks later. Why? Because high-pressure live broadcast is muscle memory, not theory. If you don’t touch the buttons right after training, the knowledge fades. In that case, even the best training bec

“EVS Tips & Tricks – How to Set Playlist Speed for All Clips at Once”
Have you ever wondered how to set the speed of all clips in an EVS playlist at once? Let’s say you have 30 elements and you want every clip to play at 50% speed. Here’s the trick: Go to your playlist. Press SHIFT + D → this activates EDIT ALL. Press B → this opens the SPEED parameter. Use your T-bar to set the speed (for example 50%) – this will apply to all elements in the playlist at the same time. Don’t forget to check our Broadcast Academy for the best EVS VODs and manual

Mastering EVS IPDirector: Grouping Clips
Global production, hundreds of clips to roll, and a ruthless clock while producers and editors look you in the eye and ask, “Are you ready?” In moments like these, EVS IPDirector earns its keep: the Group function in the Playlist panel turns a messy list into clean, named blocks you can cue and play with a single click. In this episode, I’ll show you what the Group function does, when to use it, and exactly how to make it work for you. Let’s explain what the Group function in

“EVS vs Grass Valley Dyno S: Real-Match Lessons from Poland–Denmark for Replay Operators”
What an amazing match tonight: Poland vs Denmark. We almost won it — last second, last action, and Denmark scores. Draw. That’s handball. From the tech side, we ran the whole show on Grass Valley Dyno S, and I’ll really argue that Dyno is a great machine when you need massive multi–play-out with many replay packages at once. For this kind of work, I sometimes enjoy it even more than EVS. Why? Because with Dyno S you have very clear thumbnails, metadata and clip organization.

„EVS Career Growth: How Our Students Turn OB VAN Practice into Real Broadcast Careers”
Today Kielce and the EHF – Handball Champions League. I’m on my way to the OB VAN and it’s going to be a lot of fun. Big game, a lot of replays, and a perfect training ground. What makes it special today? One of our University of Television students will be with us in the OB VAN. We’ve organised an additional replay server just for him. He will sit next to us, the EVS operators, and mirror our work live during the match. There is no better way to learn replay than this: real

“ Knowing a bit of engineering makes you a much better EVS operator”
When you walk into an OB van, you need to understand what you’re actually working on. EVS Multicam is full of settings that can completely change your day – and your stress level: default clip duration pre-roll & post-roll freeze on mark default transitions playlist speed behaviour guard bands Every one of these options affects your workflow, timing, and confidence. That’s why, at the University of Television, we don’t treat “operator” and “engineer” as two separate worlds. A

“EHF European League match”
Today it’s full throttle on Grass Valley K2 Dyno S for the EHF European League Men 2025/26 group match in Ostrów Wielkopolski: POL Rebud KPR Ostrovia Ostrów vs FRA Montpellier Handball. Handball is one of those sports where replay can completely change how the viewer experiences the game. One angle shows the contact, another the emotion, a third reveals the tactical mistake that started the action. If you miss it, the moment is gone. Tonight is all about: Ultra-quick turnarou

“15 hours of transmission”
What a day, what a night. 15 hours of transmission. Am I proud? Yes, I’m proud I did it. I’m proud I kept the focus for so long. Don’t worry – they paid me well 😄 But honestly, I still prefer shorter shifts. However… I had a lot of fun. In total, I created 770 clips and 38 playlists during the show. The closing montage alone was built from 122 clips, carefully selected and edited to wrap everything up in style. And that’s the real secret: Practice, practice, practice. There’

“ EVS Tips & Tricks – White Flash Transitions Between Interviews ⚡️”
Have you seen those nice white flashes between interviews in a playlist – like a quick white board between guests? Here’s how to do it directly on EVS Multicam: In Multicam, go to the Setup screen (or press SHIFT + F2). Open the Operation tab (CTRL + 7) and go to page 2. Change the Fade to/from Color from black to white. Now when you use the V transition between clips in your playlist, you get that clean white flash between interviews instead of a standard black fade. And if

Shuttle Pad Pro v2 - The Essential Tool for Every EVS IPDirector Operator
Worldwide production - During rehearsals, a friend came to me and asked, “Can you help me with the EVS IPDirector?” “Sure,” I said, and took a seat at the workstation, but something felt off. Something was missing. I asked, “Where’s the Shuttle Pad Pro?” He looked at me and said, “That’s the problem.” And honestly? That made everything more difficult than it needed to be. "🎥 EVS Tips & Tricks: Playing and Editing the Same Playlist"
Many EVS operators still believe they can’t edit a playlist while it’s playing out. But here’s the truth — you absolutely can. It’s a simple, smart workflow that can save your show when time is tight. How It Works Take two EVS LSM controllers. Load the same playlist on both. Start your playout from the primary controller and lock it using: CLEAR + MENU + ENTER Use the second controller to edit or add clips to that same playlist. Whatever changes you make on the second control

“ Inside the Replay Ecosystem: From DreamCatcher and SimplyLive to EVS XT-VIA”
When we talk about replay systems around the world, it’s fascinating how regional preferences differ. Across much of Central and Western Europe — including Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Lithuania, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands — systems like Ross Mira and DreamCatcher are not widely used. As far as I’m concerned, they are much more popular in the Americas, especially DreamCatcher, which has evolved a lot over the years. Since I first tried it in 2016, it has made

"Where Does Riedel SimplyLive Sit in the Broadcast Food Chain?"
Let me put it this way — I don’t really see vMix , DreamCatcher (Evertz) , Grass Valley LiveTouch or K2 Dyno S , Vizrt 3Play , Ross Mira , SloMoTV , or Hawk-Eye as direct competition to Riedel SimplyLive . These are all excellent systems in their own fields, but they are primarily replay boxes . Riedel SimplyLive is something different — a flexible, modular, and scalable ecosystem that can start as a replay unit and grow into a full live-production environment. Replay-wise,
