"Inside the EVS Engineering Training — Where Broadcast Knowledge Gets Real"

We’re right in the middle of our EVS Engineering Training Series — and I have to say, this part is always my favorite.

When a student joins us, we don’t just show the EVS software interface and call it a day. We go much deeper. We start with the essentials — the EVS Toolbox, that mysterious “black magic” for many engineers. It’s the heart of how to correctly connect the back panel of an EVS server.

But then comes the really cool part — we open the EVS server physically.

We take it apart, look inside, and explore what it’s made of: hard drives, boards, and components. Students get to touch the technology, to see that the EVS server isn’t some kind of phantom — it’s a real, physical, beautifully designed broadcast machine.

From there, we move to configuration:

The student sets up a real 4In/4Out system, connects all cables, LSM-VIA remote, XClient workstations, switches, monitors, and converters — everything, by hand.

Here’s the twist: before the session, I deliberately mess up the entire IT infrastructure.

Yes, on purpose.

So the student has to fix it, rebuild the PCLAN, create a new Config Line from scratch, and reconfigure every Multicam setting manually. Only when the entire EVS network runs properly — multiviewers active, switcher online, playback smooth — does the student graduate from that day’s challenge.

We don’t care who the student is, or how much they paid. No one leaves the studio until everything works.

Because here, quality beats quantity every single time.

And because true engineering requires focus and precision, all EVS Engineering Trainings at the University of Television are individual. One-on-one only.

That’s the only way to forge a true EVS engineer.

Honestly, I wish I had this kind of training ten years ago when I was struggling to understand how things really worked. The wisdom you gain here — the hands-on part — is priceless.
