Why does the EVS server show 50 Hz and not 50p? Because EVS splits the video format into two separate pieces of information.

The Field rate line, 50 Hz, gives us 50 timing intervals every second. The Resolution line, 1080p, tells us that the picture is progressively scanned. The letter p belongs to the picture format, not to the number 50.

When we combine both lines, 1080p plus 50 Hz, we get 1080p/50. That means 50 complete Full HD frames every second.

But 50 Hz does not always mean 50 complete frames. If the server were configured as 1080i at 50 Hz, we would have 50 interlaced fields per second, creating 25 complete frames.

So the simple rule is: never read the Hz value alone. Always combine the field rate with the resolution and check whether the format is progressive or interlaced.
