Replay Operator Tips & Tricks: a personal opinion.
To my mind, one of the most natural transitions in the broadcast industry is from replay operator to vision switcher. Why? Because so many of the skills we need are already part of our everyday work.
We work with multiple cameras from day one. We watch different angles, understand framing and learn to recognise which shot tells the story best.
We tell stories. Operating replay means more than pressing buttons. We choose moments, angles and sequences to show viewers what happened. In a way, we’re already directing.
We understand editing and montage. We need the basics and the more advanced techniques: how shots work together, when to move from a wide shot to a close-up, and when it makes sense to break the rules.
We work under pressure. We have to manage stress, stay focused and keep making accurate decisions while the production moves on around us.
We communicate clearly and briefly. In live television, there’s no time for philosophical debates on the intercom. We need to get the right information to the right person in a few words.
We communicate with camera operators. We request shots and discuss what we need for replay. That experience carries over naturally to vision switching, where working directly with camera operators is an essential part of the job.
We understand the replay department from the inside. From the vision switcher’s seat, knowing what’s happening on the back bench of the OB van is a huge advantage. You understand what the replay operators are preparing, what they can provide and how to communicate with them. There’s a specific language to it, and plenty of little details that make a difference.
That’s why, in my opinion, the EVS position is such a natural starting point for moving into vision switching. Multicamera awareness, storytelling, editing, pressure and communication are already part of the job.
