"Do EVS Operators Earn a Lot?"

Let’s Talk Value, Not Just Numbers

It’s one of those eternal industry questions:

Do EVS operators earn a lot?

Well, if you compare what we make to the median salary across Europe, the answer becomes clear — we’re doing well. The income level for active professionals in our field, especially in live sports and entertainment, positions us well above the European average.

But the real question is:

💬 Is it enough for you?

Some people feel successful when they can buy a house in Portofino.

Others feel accomplished when they can buy a new Škoda and sleep peacefully knowing the bills are paid.

There’s no single definition of “a lot.”

It depends on your life, your needs, and your values.

Yes — we’re privileged to work in a high-demand field.

Yes — the money is good.

But also — there’s competition. Growing every year. New operators. New standards. New expectations.

Which brings us to something most freelancers overlook: taxation.

🇪🇺 Europe: A Freelancer’s Playground — Or a Tax Maze?

We, European EVS operators are lucky to live and work in the largest free economic zone in the world — the European Union’s Schengen Area.

Nowhere else do you have this kind of freedom to live, work, and move between countries with ease. That freedom isn’t just about lifestyle — it’s a financial opportunity too.

Why?

Because where you live and where you pay taxes can drastically affect how much of your income you actually keep.

Take two countries:

In Belgium, freelancers face progressive income taxes up to 50% (plus surcharges), and adding ~20.5% social security contributions can push the total effective burden over 55–60% of gross income for higher earners.

In Poland, freelancers opting for the 19% flat tax add 4.9% health contributions (partially deductible) and fixed monthly social security costs (~PLN 1,600–2,000), leading to an effective burden of 35–45% typically—still hefty, but 10–20% lower than Belgium overall.

Let’s just say:

Some systems reward freelancers. Others punish them.

So if you’re freelancing in the broadcast world — it’s not just about chasing gigs anymore.

It’s about choosing where you want your life — and your taxes — to be based.

It’s not just geography. It’s calculation.

🎬 So yes — we EVS operators earn well. But how much you keep, how far it takes you, and how balanced your life becomes?

That’s up to you.
