EVS – What Is It, Really?
EVS is the backbone of live television. It’s the most well-known and trusted producer of broadcast replay solutions in the world — and in this course, we focus on its most powerful system: EVS LSM-VIA, part of the latest VIA generation.
But what exactly is EVS?
EVS servers are professional machines used to ingest, record, replay, and playout multiple camera feeds simultaneously — often up to 12 per server. What makes EVS so unique is that it allows operators to replay while recording, and edit on-air in real time.
You’ve already seen it in action — every time you watch a football match and see instant replays of a goal from multiple angles (wide, close-up, player reaction), that’s EVS. The halftime highlights? EVS. End-of-match recap? EVS.
But EVS doesn’t stop at sports.
You’ve also seen it on live entertainment shows like You Can Dance or The Voice of Poland, where viewer-voted highlights of the best performances are created live and delivered in seconds. Those lightning-fast cuts? Also EVS.
Even global events like the Oscars, Grammys, or BAFTAs use EVS to delay live broadcasts, correct mistakes, and ensure smooth playout of video packages — for example, when Kevin Costner walks onto the stage and a montage of his best movies plays behind him… that’s EVS too.
In concerts and live shows, EVS powers LED wall content, playing back video animations and visual effects in perfect sync with the performers. Flames behind Christina Aguilera? Moving backgrounds behind Coldplay or Ed Sheeran? Often controlled and triggered from EVS.
In short:
The world of live television cannot function without EVS.
It’s everywhere — from sports arenas and reality shows to concerts, talk shows, and global award ceremonies.
