In this EVS IPDirector episode, let’s focus on the Ret tool. This is one of the most useful functions in EVS IPDirector. This tool is especially valuable for EVS operators who need to quickly navigate to specific moments in recorded media without being restricted by clip boundaries. I will explain what the 'Ret' button is and when and where an EVS operator can use it.

During a typical news television workday, the EVS system records dozens of political statements and press conferences. The EVS operator cuts out relevant fragments from each recording, creating clips. Suddenly, the program editor asks you to play back not just a clipped segment from a conference, but the entire conference. Thanks to the 'Ret' function, the operator can easily find the precise moment and open the entire conference without any IN and OUT points marked.
The Ret function allows an EVS IPDirector operator to instantly remove a clip's IN and OUT points, returning to the original recording (record train/ingest session) at the clip's precise timecode. This provides efficient editing and review without manual searching.
If you work on EVS LSM or EVS LSM Via it’s exactly the same function as the Return function on LSM or LSM-VIA remotes.

How use Ret Button in EVS IP Director
Load Clip in Control Panel, it activates Ret Button.
Click the Ret button in the Control Panel.
IPDirector automatically returns to recording trains exactly at the same moment as clip but without any IN and OUT points boundaries.
Now you can for example play beyond the original boundaries or mark new IN and OUT points to save a new clip or you can just play from that point beyond In Out boundaries.
Ret function eliminates manually jogging for search for the original media. Also EVS operators can easily extend a clip by redefining new IN and OUT points.
WARNING: Ret function may not work If the recorded media ( record train or recording ingest) has been deleted or overwritten from the server, the Ret function will not work.
To summarise Ret function in EVS IPDirector is a powerful tool that enhances the flexibility and efficiency of broadcast workflows by providing quick access to original media, enabling operators to go beyond clip boundaries and create new content as needed.
