Mastering EVS IPDirector Shortcuts: Speed Up Your Workflow

I remember my first weeks on EVS IPDirector. My mouse hand was constantly flying around clicking through menus, opening panels, trying to keep up. Then one of the senior EVS operators advised me: “Forget the mouse. Learn your shortcuts”. He was right. In this episode I will show you how to modify and use shortcuts in EVS IPDirector.
In EVS IP Director, shortcuts are simply keyboard combinations that trigger functions instantly. Instead of clicking through menus, you hit a key, and boom your Channel Explorer pops up, your playlist loads, or your clip goes on-air.
Many shortcuts can be customized to fit your workflow. That’s huge because every operator has their own rhythm.
How to define a shortcut
Open the Define Shortcuts window by clicking Tools > Define Shortcut
Pick the tool in which you want to change the shortcut (Control Panel, Channel Management, Playlist, etc.)
Choose the function from the list.
Press your desired key or key combination.
The new shortcut will appear in the "Current Value" column.
If your chosen shortcut is free, it updates immediately. If it’s already taken, EVS IPDirector warns you and you can either swap, clear the other, or cancel it.
If something goes wrong, you can always reset everything with the “Back to Default Values” button.
Always check shortcut
Before broadcast, there's one golden rule that every experienced operator knows: always double-check your shortcuts. Why? Because the person who used IPDirector before you might have changed something without telling you.
Imagine this: you’re used to pressing the L key to lock the Control Panel. But someone else reassigned the L key to “Go to Live.” Now, during playout, you hit the L key thinking you’re locking the panel but you ruin a broadcast. By the time you realize the shortcuts were changed, it’s already too late.
