IPDirector Thursday: How to Use the Gang Tool in EVS IPDirector

Starting three different clips at exactly the same moment? No problem for EVS IPDirector. In this episode, I’ll walk you through how to use the Gang tool to output player channels simultaneously in EVS IPDirector.

Every production brings its own set of challenges and creative ideas. In one recent show, the main producer asked for three separate pictures to playout at the exact same time, perfectly synchronized. Of course, manually starting three clips simultaneously isn’t a realistic option. This is where the Gang tool in EVS IPDirector comes in handy, allowing for seamless synchronization.

Firstly, we have to understand what “GANG” means in the EVS IPDirector. The 'Gang' feature links multiple output player channels into a group and allows for their simultaneous control. When player channels are ganged, any playback, delay, or shuttle command applied to one player channel is executed simultaneously on all the others in the group. For example, if you want to playout three clips at the same time, you have to load the clips on three outputs player channels and just click 'play button' on one of them. All clips will start playing simultaneously.

How to Gang player channels in EVS IPDirector:

  1. Open Channel Explorer and click Tree view to see all player channels

  2. Hold CTRL or SHIFT on the keyboard and click on the player channels to select them.

  3. Right-click one of the selected player channels. Choose "Gang" from the contextual menu.

  4. Player channels are linked/connected. A gang icon will appear next to each ganged channel

  5. Now command applied to one player channel is simultaneously executed on all the others in ganged group

Ganged output player channels are controlled through the Control Panels. When the play, pause, delay function is initiated on one channel, the same action is applied simultaneously across all ganged channels. This ensures that the media plays in sync.
